The Beasts Of WildLupin's Lair

As far back as I can remember, I’ve had a thing for animals.  Much to my family’s chagrin, I never played with dolls, preferring instead to bring home frogs, snakes, lizards, baby birds, etc.  I always knew animals would play a big role in my life one way or another.  Indeed, they’ve pretty much dictated the direction of my life ever since I struck out on my own.

Dogs  of course dominate the landscape.  Many people own dogs, but my life basically revolves around them.  I own just one dog currently, but spend a great deal of time working with other people’s dogs as well.  Click on Luka to read more.

As much as I love dogs, Cats were my first love.  I got my first cat when I was about 3 years old and I’ve never been without one since.  This fabulous creature on the right is Austin, who is kind of…. um…. funny.  You mean funny “ha-ha”, or funny “queer”?  You be the judge!  Click on Austin to see more of him and his feline friends.

Goats?! What the…?

Yep, the latest addition to my menagerie are beasts of the Caprine variety.  Not too long ago, I went on a 4-day backpacking trip and ran out of beer on the second day.  After a six-mile hike back to the truck to get more, I thought, “This is ridiculous.  I need a pack animal.”  After doing a bit of research on the web, I discovered that goats are ideally suited as low-impact, easily managed pack animals.  Soon afterward I bought a pair of yearling wethers (neutered males) and have discovered them to be delightful companions.  Here my Alpine goat, Pan, puckers up for a smooch.  Click on him to see more goat photos.

Alfred Hitchcock notwithstanding, I find my Birds to be pleasant and entertaining creatures.  I have had a small flock of laying hens for several years, and recently acquired a bunch more of all different varieties.  For the first time I actually have a couple of roosters and a couple of turkeys.  My neighbors love me.  Click on the helpful turkey (who answers to “Turkey”) to see more of my feathered friends.

I

I have had many other species over the years… ferrets, rats, a boa constrictor… and chances are, I’ll add more species in the future.
